A few years ago, my younger sister and I boarded our flight forNorfolk, Virginia. Just as we were about to board the plane, amechanic emerged from inside the aircraft and blocked the door withhis arms. He turned to the flight attendant and hurriedly stated,“We got problems!”

I thought to myself, “Why did I have to be the one to hear that? Why couldn’t I have been at the back of the line?” Very soonwe were back in the terminal, waiting, and then ultimately back onthe plane. I waited for the pilot to give an explanation. Pilotstake courses to ease passengers’ mind, right? They know what to sayto calm nerves.[来源:Z#xx#k.Com]

Unfortunately, I don’t think this pilot took that course. Soonhis voice boomed throughout the plane, “Sorry for the delay, ladiesand gentlemen. We had no power on the plane. We have a generator onthe ground right now, and we are going to jump-start the engines.Once we get them going, we will get up in the air and head toNorfolk, and see what happens.”

That was it. That was all he said. We are going to get up in theair, and see what happens? Couldn’t we have another plan, onethat’s been worked out just a little better?

At this point, all I could do was to laugh nervously. One womanstarted yelling, “Oh no! We are going to crash!” There were sighsof desperation and anxiety spreading throughout the cabin. Then thevoice of the pilot came over the intercom again, “Ladies andgentlemen, I know you are frustrated—so are we—we know you are hot,we only have one engine going right now, and it is working doubletime.”

We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched thetarmac than a round of applause burst out, as everyone breathed asigh of relief.

Although, I do sincerely like to have a plan better than “seewhat happens” worked out when flying—it really isn’t such a bad life strategy.Success will never be guaranteed. The best thing that you can do isjust get up in the air, and see what happens. Sometimes adjustmentswould be made in the air, or shall we say, in the middle of the process.

55. By saying “Why couldn’t I have been at the back of theline?”(in Para2), the author meant.__.

B. he liked to sit in the front of the plane

C. he didn’t want to hear what the mechanic said

D. he didn’t like the pilot

56. How might the author feel when the plane finally got up inthe air?

A. desperated B. nervous C. excited D. relieved

57. According to the passage, we can know that __________.

A. there was only one engine on the plane

B. there was a generator on the plane

C. the strategy that the pilot adopted is not always bad
D. the author thought highly of the pilot

58. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. A terrible journey B. Success will never be guaranteed

C. An inexperienced pilot D. See what happens

The first person to use the sun's energy on a large scale wasthe Greek, Archimedes. He used it to set fire to an attacking Romanfleet at Syracuse in 212 B. C.. He did this by means of a burningglass composed of small square mirrors made to move in alldirections on hinges (转轴). In the early twentieth century, solarenergy was used to power water distillation(蒸馏) plants in Chile andirrigation pumps in Egypt.

Today over ninety-eight percent of our energy comes from fossilfuels; coal, oil and natural gas. But coal and oil are not onlyfuels. They are also important raw materials for our chemicalindustries. People now think we should limit their use as fuel, otherwise the world's supply will soon run out. Consequently, muchresearch is being done into the practical use of the sun forheating (and cooling) buildings. The less fossil fuel we use now,the more we will have for the future.

Solar energy is transmitted from the sun—through space—to earthby electromagnetic radiation(电磁辐射). It must be converted to heatbefore it can be used. Various types of solar energy collectors(also called absorbers or absorber plates) are used to convert thesun's radiation to heat. Solar-heated hot water provides not onlythe building's hot-water requirements, but space-heating as well. This solar system, based on water-heating, works like this. Each ofits collectors, placed on the roof, consists of a shallowfiberglass tray that holds a number of copper tubes under a specialglass cover. The tubes are, in turn, fixed to a blackened metalsurface which absorbs energy from the sun. The sun's rays, passingthrough the glass, heat the water in the tubes.

Since the energy is available only during the day and only thenwhen there is not a great deal of cloud cover, the heat must bestored. This can be done in water, or in rock or pebble beds. Theenergy is stored in the hot water in the pipes.

59. Solar energy was first used_______.

A. to start a fire B. to cook food

C. to power a heating-system D. in a war

60. What must be done to solar energy before it can be used?

A. It must be stored in rock beds. B. It must be distilled.

C. It must be converted to heat. D. It must be purified.

61. There is so much research into the use of solar energybecause _______.

A. more irrigation projects are needed
B. the construction industry is expanding

C. fossil fuels are running out
D. it transmits electromagnetic radiation

62. Solar energy must be stored because_______.

A. it is limited B. there is not much of it

C. it is not always available D. the passage does not tell uswhy

D

Humans might be the most highly-evolved species on the planet, but most animals possess skills we can only dream of having.Imagine how much electricity we could save if we could see in thedark the way cats do. Imagine leaping from tree to tree like amonkey. Giraffes, which are otherwise calm and good-natured, sleeponly 4.6 hours a day.
We realized a long, long time ago that nature provides the bestblueprint for invention. We’ve borrowed canals from beavers andreflectors from cat’s eyes. Although the words “bionics” becamepopular only after the 1960s, history shows that nature has alwaysprovided ideas on solving everyday problems. Our archives(档案)don’tgo back to the time of Leonardo da Vinci and his bird-like flyingmachines, but we can take you to the late 19th century, where weapplied those same principles for building our first practicalairplanes.
To prepare for their flight at Kitty Hawk, the Wright brothersstudied the movements of pigeons to figure out how they stayed highup when they were heavier than air. Their success inspired scoresof successors to improve on the airplane by studying variousaspects of nature. One of Orville Wright’s pupils caught andstuffed seagulls to examine their wingspan. Meanwhile, two Frenchinventors examined spinning sycamore(梧桐) seeds in an effort toapply those same motions, reversed, to a helicopter.
Some examples are more obvious than others. The outside of theairplane designed by the Wright brothers looks like a minimalistic(简单抽象艺术) structure. On the other hand, Barney Connett’s fishsubmarine actually looks like a fish.
Some bio-inspired concepts have yet to be invented. In the 1960s,the US Army commissioned several university professors to conductresearch on the motor skills animals in hope of applying those sameabilities to tanks. Tanks that run like horses or jump likegrasshoppers(蚂蚱)-sounds shocking, doesn’t it? But imagine how lifewould change if we could achieve that.
63. “cats”,”monkeys” and “giraffes” mentioned in paragraph 1 areexamples to illustrate____.
A. they are highly-evolved species as humans.
B. humans can learn animals’ skills.
C. they are skillful in different ways.
D. animals have skills that humans do not possess.
64. Which of the following in true about the research carried outby the US Army?

A. It has changed our life.
B. It has cost a large sum of money.
C. It has improved the abilities of tanks.
D. It has not succeeded yet.
65. What happened after the Wright brothers’success?
A. People carried out a systematic study on pigeons.
B. People studied more animals and plants to develop theairplane.
C. People cound fly their airplane for fun.
D. People kept their airplane at a Frenchgallery.[来源:学§科§网Z§X§X§K]

66. What does the writer want to tell in the passage?
A. Many inventions get ideas from nature.
B. Some animals possess unique skills.
C. People should protect nature.
D. Bionics is far from perfect.

Google is a world-famous company, with its headquarters inMountain View, California. It was set up in a Silicon Valley garagein 1998, and  inflated (膨胀) with the Internetbubble. Even when everything around it collapsed the company kepton inflating. Google’s search engine is so widespread across theworld that search became Google, and google became averb. The world fell in love with the effective, fascinatingly fasttechnology.

Google owes much of its success to the brilliance of S. Brin andL. Page, but also to a series of fortunate events. It was Page who,at Stanford in 1996, initiated  the academicproject that eventually became Google’s search engine. Brin, whohad met Page at a student orientation a year earlier, joined theproject early on . They were both Ph.D. candidates when theydevised the search engine which was better than the rest and, without any marketing, spread by word of mouth from early adoptersto, eventually, your grandmother.

Their breakthrough, simply put, was that when their searchengine crawled the Web, it did more than just look for wordmatches, it also tallied (统计) and ranked a host of other criticalfactors like how websites link to one another. That delivered farbetter results than anything else. Brin and Page meant to nametheir creation Googol (the mathematical term for the number 1followed by 100 zeroes), but someone misspelled the word so itstuck as Google. They raised money from prescient (有先见之明的)professors and venture capitalists, and moved off campus to turnGoogle into business. Perhaps their biggest stroke of luck cameearly on when they tried to sell their technology to other searchengines, but no one met their price, and they built it up on theirown.

The next breakthrough came in 2000, when Google figured out howto make money with its invention. It had lots of users, but almostno one was paying. The solution turned out to be advertising, andit’s not an exaggeration to say that Google is now essentially anadvertising company, given that that’s the source of nearly all itsrevenue. Today it is a giant advertising company, worth $100billion.

67.How did Google's Search engine spread all over theworld?
A. By word of mouth B. Through the Internet
C. Through advertising D. By marketing

68.Google's Search engine originated from ____________.
A. the brilliance of S. Brin and L.Page
B. a series of fortunate events
C. the academic project
D. the rest search engines

69.Brin and Page decided to set up their own businessbecause__________.
A. no one wanted to buy their technology
B. no one met their price
C. they wanted to turn Google into business and build it up ontheir own
D. they could raise money from prescient professors and venturecapitalists

70.The revenue of the Google company largely comes from_________.
A. Google's users B. advertising
C. a giant company D. advertising companies

(Text 7)

W: Tell me exactly what happened.

M: I was walking through the park yesterday when a woman knockedme right off my feet and ran off through the trees.

W: Can you describe the woman for me?

M: Yeah. She was very tall and wearing a white and black dress,a red sweater over it, and a pair of basketball shoes. She had aheavy build, with long hair.

W: What was, uh, taken … exactly?

M: Well, just my left shoe.

W: Oh, this man again! He often wanders around the park. Helikes to remove the left shoe from men for some unknown reason andusually returns the shoe to the crime scene a couple of dayslater.

M: I’ll just take off my left shoe every time I walk through thepark.

(Text 8)

W: How do you like living in the country?

M: To be honest, I never really appreciated the city until Imoved away. Country living is terribly inconvenient.

W: What do you dislike most about it?

M: I can’t stand getting up early. In order to get to work ontime, I have to leave the house at 7:00.

W: Do you drive or take the train?

M: I drive, and what I don’t like about it is all thetraffic.

W: You always see the bad side of things. Isn’t there anythingyou find attractive?

M: Don’t pay any attention to me. Sometimes I’m critical ofthings even though I know they are good for me.

W: Being away from the city must be nice on weekends. You have achance to get a lot of exercise, don’t you?

M: Yes, one of my pastimes is golf and now I can playfrequently. I’ve improved, too. I guess I shouldn’t be so quick tocriticize living in the country.

(Text 9)

M: Hello, Linda, I haven’t seen you for ages. What are you doing in town?

W: Oh, I’ve just come back from Japan.

M: Oh, you’ve been abroad, haven’t you?

W: Yes, I’ve got a job there. And how about you? The last timewe talked, didn’t you tell me you were going to open your ownsupermarket business?

M: That’s right. I was. But things turned out differently.

W: But you seemed so determined to do that. What happened?

M: Well, it’s very complicated, and I’m sure you don’t want toknow all the details. Anyway I decided that opening my own businessjust wasn’t for me. So I decided to stay at my old job instead.

W: So you are still working in that shop.

M: Yes. Well, a lot sure has happened since we last saw eachother.

W: I’ll say! You know, we should try to stay in touch.

M: Let’s have lunch together sometime soon.

W: Good idea.
