Chief Seattle's Statement
Howcan you buy or sell the sky, the warmth of the land? The idea isstrange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and thesparkle of the water, how can you buy them?
Everypart of the Earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pineneedle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, everyclear and humming insect is holy in the memory and experience of mypeople. The sap which courses through the trees carries the memoryof red man.
Thewhite man's dead forget the country of their birth when they go towalk among the stars. Our dead never forget this beautiful Earth,for it is the mother of the red man. We are part of the Earth andit is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters, the deer,the horse, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rockycrests, the juices in the meadows, the body heat of the pony, andthe man, all belong to the same family.
So,when the Great Chief in Washington sends word that he wishes to buyour land, he asks much of us. The Great White Chief sends word hewill reserve us a place so that we can live comfortably toourselves. He will be our father and we will be his children.
Sowe will consider your offer to buy land. But it will not be easy.For this land is sacred to us. This shining water that moves instreams and rivers is not just water but the blood of ourancestors. If we sell you land, you must remember that it issacred, and you must teach your children that it is sacred and thateach ghostly reflection in the clear water of the lakes tells ofevents in the life of my people. The waters murmur is the voice ofmy father's father.
Therivers of our brothers they quench our thirst. The rivers carry ourcanoes and feed our children. If we sell you our land, you mustremember to teach your children that the rivers are our brothers,and yours, and you must henceforth give the rivers the kindnessthat you would give my brother.
Weknow that the white man does not understand our ways. One portionof land is the same to him as the next, for he is a stranger whocomes in the night and takes from the land whatever he needs. TheEarth is not his brother, but his enemy and when he has conqueredit, he moves on. He leaves his father's graves behind, and he doesnot care. He kidnaps the Earth from his children, and he does notcare. His father's grave, and his children's birthright areforgotten. He treats his mother, the Earth, and his brother, thesame, as things to be bought, plundered, sold like sheep or brightbeads. His appetite will devour the Earth and leave behind only adesert.
Ido not know. Our ways are different from yours ways. The sight ofyour cities pains the eyes of the red man. But perhaps it isbecause the red man is a savage and does not understand. There isno quiet place in the white man's cities. No place to hear theunfurling of leaves in spring, or the rustle of an insect's wings.But perhaps it is because I am a savage and do not understand. Theclatter only seems to insult the ears. And what is there to life ifa man cannot hear the lonely cry of a whippoorwill or the argumentsof the frogs around a pond at night. I am a red man and do notunderstand. The Indian prefers the soft sound of the wind dartingover the face of the pond, and the smell of the wind itself,cleansed by a midday rain, or scented with the pinon pine.
Theair is precious to the red man, for all things share the samebreath - the beast, the tree, the man, they all share the samebreath. The white man does not seem to notice the air he breathes.Like a man dying for many days, he is numb to the stench. But if wesell you our land, you must remember that the air is precious tous, that the air shares its spirit with all the life itsupports.
Thewind that gave our grandfather his first breath also receives hislast sigh. And if we sell you our land, you must keep it apart andsacred, as a place where even the white man can go to taste thewind that is sweetened by the meadow's flowers. So we will consideryour offer to buy our land. If we decide to accept, I will make onecondition - the white man must treat the beasts of this land as hisbrothers. I am a savage and do not understand any other way. I haveseen a thousand rotting buffaloes on the prairie, left by the whiteman who shot them from a passing train. I am a savage and do notunderstand how the smoking iron horse can be made more importantthan the buffalo that we kill only to stay alive. What is manwithout the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die froma great loneliness of the spirit. For whatever happens to thebeasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.
Youmust teach your children that the ground beneath their feet is theashes of our grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tellyour children that the Earth is rich with the lives of our kin.Teach your children what we have taught our children, that theEarth is our mother. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the sons ofthe Earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit uponthemselves.
Thiswe know - the Earth does not belong to man - man belongs to theEarth. This we know. All things are connected like the blood whichunites one family. All things are connected. Whatever befalls theEarth - befalls the sons of the Earth. Man did not weave the web oflife - he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, hedoes to himself. Even the white man, whose God walks and talks withhim as friend to friend, cannot be exempt from the common destiny.We may be brothers after all. We shall see. One thing we know,which the white man may one day discover - Our God is the sameGod.
Youmay think now that you own Him as you wish to own our land, but youcannot. He is the God of man, and His compassion is equal for redman and the white. The Earth is precious to Him, and to harm theEarth is to heap contempt on its Creator. The whites too shallpass, perhaps sooner than all other tribes. Contaminate your bed,and you will one night suffocate in your own waste.
Butin your perishing you will shine brightly, fired by the strength ofthe God who brought you to this land and for some special purposegave you dominion over this land and over the red man.
Thatdestiny is a mystery to us, for we do not understand when thebuffalo are slaughtered, the wild horses tamed, the secret cornersof the forest heavy with scent of many men, and the view of theripe hills blotted by talking wires.
Whereis the thicket? Gone.
Whereis the Eagle? Gone.
Theend of living and the beginning of survival.

  假如我们并不拥有空气的清新与流水的光耀,您怎能买下它们呢?
  对我的人民而言,大地的每一部份都是圣洁的。
  每一枝灿烂的松针、每一处沙滨、每一片密林中的薄霭、每一只跳跃及嗡嗡作响的虫儿,在我人民的记忆与经验中都是神圣的。
  树中流动着的汁液,载负着红人们的记忆。
  当白人的鬼魂在繁星之中游荡时,他们早已遗忘他们出生的家园。
  但我们的灵魂从不曾忘怀这片美丽的大地,因为她是红人的母亲。
  我们是大地的一部份,而大地也是我们的一部份。
  芳香扑鼻的花朵是我们的姊妹,鹿儿、马群和雄鹰都是我们的兄弟。岩峻的山峰、芳馨草原上的露水、小马暖暖的体温、以及我们人类,都是一家人。所以,当伟大的白人领袖自华盛顿传话来,说他想要买我们的土地时,他对我们的要求实在太多了。
  伟大的领袖传话说,他会为我们保留一片土地,让我们得以舒服地过日子。他将成为我们的父兄,而我们将是他的子民。因此,我们得考虑你们的要求。但,这并不容易呀!因为这块土地对我们而言是非常神圣。

  河,载负着我们的独木舟,并养育我们的子孙。如果我们将土地卖给你们,你们必定要教导你们的子孙,它是我们的手足,也是你们的弟兄,因此,你们一定要善待河,一如你们善待你们的兄弟一样。我们知道,白人不能体会我们的想法。每一片大地对他们而言,看来都是一样的。
  因为他是个异乡客,夜晚偷偷来袭,并从土地上拿走任何他想要的东西。大地不是他的兄弟,而是他的敌人,当他征服之后,便又离去。他无视于父祖的坟地,他不在乎。他剥夺了子孙的土地,一点都不在乎祖先们的劳苦与后代生存的权力。他对待他的母亲-大地,及兄弟,就如同绵羊与耀眼的首饰一样,可以随意地买卖与掠夺。他的贪婪将毁灭大地,而最后留下来的,将只是一片荒芜。我真的不懂。我们之间的生活方式是如此不同。
  你们城市的景象刺痛了红人们的眼睛。但也许因为红人们是野蛮人而无法理解吧!在白人的城镇里找不到宁静。没有一个地方能听到春天枝叶迎风招展的声音,或是虫儿挀翅的欢鸣。但也许因为我是个野蛮人而无法理解吧!这些喧闹声看来只会污损我们的耳朵。假如不能听到夜鹰孤寂的叫声,或是夜晚池畔青蛙的争鸣。那会是怎么样的生活呢?我是红人,所以不明白。
  印地安人喜欢微风拂过池面的轻柔细语,以及被午后阵雨所洗净、或是被松翼所熏香的风的味道。大气对红人而言是珍贵的,因为野兽、森林、人类及万物都分享着同样的气息。白人似乎不在意他们所呼吸的空气。就好像死了几天的人,已经对恶臭毫无知觉。
  但是,倘若我们将土地卖给你们,您们一定要记住,大气对我们而言是珍贵的,衪与衪所养育的万物共享着这份灵气。
  风,送来了我们祖先的第一口气,也带走了他们最后一声的叹息。假如我们将土地卖给了你们,你们务必维持祂的独特与圣洁,使祂成为一块即使是白人也可以品尝被花草所熏香的风的地方。因此,我们得考虑你们的要求。假如我们接受的话,我有一个条件,那就是白人必需对待大地上的野兽如自已的兄弟一般。我只是个野人,并不了解其它的想法。
  我曾经目睹被路过火车上的白人所射杀的千万头野牛,牠们的尸体被弃置于大草原之上任其腐败。我只是个野人,无法明白这冒着烟的铁马居然会比我们为了生存而杀死的野牛更为重要。
  人没有了野兽会变得怎么样呢?倘若所有的动物都消失了,人类将死于心灵最深处的空虚寂寞。现在发生在野兽身上的事,很快地就会发生在人类的身上。所有的一切都是相互关连的。
  你们必须教导你们的子孙,在他们脚下的土地,是我们先民的遗迹。因此,他们才会尊敬这块土地,告诉你们的孩子们,因为有着我们生命的存在,才使得大地更加地丰富。让你们的孩子知道,大地是我们的母亲,我们向来如此教育着我们的子孙。任何发生在大地上的,都会同样地降临在大地孩子身上。
  假如人们唾弃了大地,其实他们就是唾弃了自己。我们知道,大地不属于人类,而人类属于大地。我们知道,每一件事物都是有关连的,就好像血缘紧紧结合着一家人。所有的一切都是相互有着关连的。现在发生在大地的事,必将应验到人类的身上来。人类并不是编织生命之网的主宰,他只不过是其中的一丝线而已。他对大地做了什么,都会响应到自己身上。
  虽然白人的上帝与他并肩齐步,和他交谈一如他的朋友,但白人也无法豁免于相同的命运。毕竟,我们都是兄弟。我们知道一件事:终有一天我们会看到,白人必将发现我们的上帝是同一位!
  你们现在也许认为,因为你们拥有神,所以也可以占有我们的土地,但是不能这样。祂是众人的神,祂的慈悲平等地分享给红人与白人。大地对祂而言是珍贵的,对大地的伤害,是对造物主的轻蔑。白人也终将灭绝,甚至有可能比其它种族还快。如果你弄脏了自己的环境,总有一天会窒息在你所丢弃的垃圾之中。但即使您们死了,上帝也会给你们荣耀,因为祂带领你们到这片土地来,又不知为何给了你们统治红人与土地的权力。这样的命运对我们来说真是难解。尤其当野牛被屠杀,野马被训服,当森林中最隐密的角落也充满了人味,原始的山陵景象被电话线所破坏时,我们真是不明白啊!
丛林哪儿去了?消失了!
老鹰哪儿去了?不见了!
美好的生活已经结束,残喘求生的日子开始!
