DieterDengler(ChristianBale),aGerman-bornU.S.NavypilotinsquadronVA-145,isshotdowninhisA-1SkyraideroverLaosinFebruary1966,whileonacombatmission.Hesurvivesthecrashonlytobepursued,andultimatelycaptured,bythePathetLao.DenglerisgiventhechanceforleniencybytheProvinceGovernor(FrançoisChau)ifhesignsadocumentcondemningAmerica,butherefuses.Heistorturedandtakentoaprisoncamp.TherehemeetsfellowAmericanmilitarysoldiersandpilots,suchasGeneDeBruin(JeremyDavies)andDuaneW.Martin(SteveZahn),someofwhomhavebeencaptiveforyears.Denglerbeginsplanninganescape,muchtothedisbeliefofhisfellowcombatants,whohavebeendowntroddenthroughphysicalandpsychologicaltorturebythecampguards.
Eventually,alltheprisonersagreetoescape,onlyDenglerandMartinfollowthroughwiththeplanastheothersdisappearandarenotseenagaininthefilm.DenglerandMartintrytoreachtheMekongRivertocrossoverintoThailand,butMartiniskilledbyamobofangryvillagers.Eventually,DenglerisrescuedbyanAmericanhelicopterbutsequesteredinahospitalduetothetopsecretnatureofhismission.Heiscovertlytakenbacktohisship,whereheiswelcomedasaherobythecrew.
