a whitelie”。
In English a white lie means a lie ofgood intention. But whether people
should tell a white lie remains controversial. A casein point is that whether
the doctorshould inform the patient about the true condition of hisillness
when he issuffering an incurable disease. Just as shown in the picture, the
doctor is nowcaught in a dilemma. He can’t decide whether he should tellor
conceal thepatient’s serious condition.
Some people hold that telling patients abouttheir true conditions may
risk destroying their hope, which may make the illnesseven worse. So it’s
better to tell thepatient a white lie. People against this view arguethat
a while lie is afterall a lie. The patients should be informed oftheir
condition since itis their legal right to know the truth of thefact.
Lies have been recognized as a synonym for cheating and hypocrisyand
liarsare often held in contempt. However, sometimes we need lies inreal
life, because awhite lie can give one comfort and encouragement. Ifa
seriously illpatient, on hearing your while lie, can refresh himselfto
fight againstthe illness, don’t you think your lie ismeaningful?
