Dear Abby?·? I have looked after the children for four families over the last 10 years. I am now working for a family of five. I don’t make a lot of money, but I enjoy what I do.
My problem is all the gift-buying I feel required to do — such as on the children’s birthdays, Christmas and the mom’s birth of more babies. My employer (雇主) is expecting yet another baby this summer and her 3-year-old son has another birthday coming up.
I’m tired of the gift-buying and really can’t afford to do it anymore. When the new baby is born, I would like to just say “Congratulations!” Any suggestions? — Gifted Out
Dear Abby?·? I am close to 60 years old and I feel terrible to go to the dentist. Every time I pick up the phone to make an appointment (预约) I get so nervous that I feel like I’m going to die.
Do you think I will be able to find a caring, understanding dentist? Sometimes I wish I could die instead of going to the dentist. Am I crazy? — Mr. Anxiety in the U.S.A.
Dear Gifted Out?·?Yes. When the newest addition to the family arrives, give your employer a nice card. You should not be expected to come up with a gift. You are already giving these children loving and responsible care and that is gift enough.
Dear Mr. Anxiety?·?Let me put it this way — if you’re crazy, you are not alone. Many people fear going to the dentist. However, there have been improvements in the field since you were a child.
Good dental health is very important to our health, so please make an appointment at once. Tell the person who is booking the appointment what your needs are, and if that dentist can’t help you, ask for someone else who can.
50. What problem does Gifted Out have?

B. She doesn’t make a lot of money.
C. She can’t afford the gifts for her employer.
D. She is tired of looking after her employer’s babies.
51. Abby advises Gifted Out to ______.
A. give a nice card B. buy a cheap gift

LOS ANGELES — China has become the world’s second-largest market for films, after North America, and China’s box office earnings are growing by 30 percent a year. The country is changing the way Hollywood does business.
Films made or shown in China are reviewed by a board of censors (审查署), and the film Skyfall had some parts cut. The science fiction film Cloud Atlas lost 40 minutes, mostly parts showing violence (暴力). Films are also cut if they harm China image (形象).
Some big action films have a direct China connection. The adventure Iron Man 3 was partly filmed in China, so it has also been examined by Chinese officials. “Chinese opinions also influence other films, like 2012”, said Stanley Rosen at the University of Southern California. He studies China’s film industry. “Even if you’re not making in China, a film like 2012 will be very careful. A film including something that hurts Chinese feelings will simply kill the market.”
Chinese audiences love big movies with special effects. Half of Hollywood’s box office is from Chinese theaters, and Chinese officials last year raised the yearly percentage of film imports (进口) from 20 to 34. Life of Pi was well received from Taiwan-born director Ang Lee, who has won his second Oscar Award for Best Director at the 85th Academy Awards Ceremony.
“More Hollywood studios (制片公司) are finding Chinese partners for co-productions, and Disney and DreamWorks Animation (梦工厂) are putting money in tourist attractions in Shanghai.” Stanley Rosen said, “It’s a developing relationship, and Hollywood needs China, as the North American market has been flat. But China needs Hollywood, as well, as you see with DreamWorks and Disney going in.”
And China is coming to Hollywood. The Chinese company TCL has bought the right to rename the historic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. And Dalian Wanda Group has bought a key American theater chain (连锁影院), AMC. The ties between China and Hollywood are expected to grow further in the future.
54. ______ is the largest market for films in the world.
A. China B. North America C. The United States D. India
55. From the passage, we can infer that ______.
A. Chinese audiences develop Hollywood films
B. Hollywood starts to do business in a Chinese way
C. Chinese film market has an influence on Hollywood
D. Hollywood films are shown in most of Chinese theaters
56. The writer uses Disney, DreamWorks Animation and TCL as examples to ______.
A. show the connections between China and Hollywood
B. introduce the movie studios in China and Hollywood
C. show how China and Hollywood help each other
D. explain why more movie studios go into China
D
How would you like to study at an American university in China? With the news that New York University (NYU) is considering setting up a branch (分校) on Chinese mainland, the possibility of getting an American education becomes a reality. But how will Chinese students deal with a very different style of teaching? One that encourages debate (辩论), discussion and critical thinking (批判性思维); one which puts little attention on rote learning.
You know how kids ask questions all the time? Asking questions shows they are curious (好奇). So when does that natural curiosity get weak? Not at kindergarten or nursery, nor at primary school. As you grow older, perhaps refusing to draw attention to yourself by asking the teacher questions, you grow quiet. If so, that’s a pity, because questioning your teachers should be encouraged. After all, they’re the ones who’ve been educated, have a lot more experience than you and perhaps have a little wisdom. When I taught journalism at college in Scotland I enjoyed answering students’ questions. Some of them raised difficult questions. I didn’t always know the answers. If I didn’t, I’d accept it and try to find out later.
At university we were encouraged to challenge our classmates and teachers. There was often a regular meeting between teachers and some students. A student would prepare a paper on a subject and the other students would criticize it. It could be frightening. But it was a way of developing critical thinking.
We need to differentiate critical thinking with loudmouths. We’ve all come across loudmouths who speak out quickly as if they knew what they were talking about. I know one loudmouth who is paid a great deal of money by a British tabloid newspaper to entertain readers with his deeply-held prejudices (偏见). You might not agree with columnist (专栏作家) Richard Littlejohn, but you have to say that he is entertaining and there is an internal logic (内在的逻辑) to his statements. Having a logical mind can help develop critical thinking.
My wife doesn’t have a logical mind, but she does have emotional intelligence (情商). I can’t say that I have anything like her emotional intelligence, but I’d like to think some of it rubbed off on me. If you can’t at least try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, how can you understand their situation, their problems and issues?
So try to develop your powers of critical thinking. Start with books, films, music and newspapers. And don’t believe everything you read or see. Think independently.
57. According to the passage, to develop your critical thinking, you can ______.
A. keep curious and follow your heart
B. think logically, not emotionally
C. do more reading and think actively
D. voice your opinion like a loudmouth
58. The underlined words “rubbed off on me” in Paragraph 5 probably mean “______”.
A. helped me solve the problem better
B. had some influence on me in a way
C. moved it backwards and forwards
D. advised me to wear others’ shoes
59. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Want to be different? Think critically
B. Want to be critical? Think for yourself
C. Choose NYU, choose critical thinking
D. Importance of improving critical thinking

Flynn McGarry, a 14-year-old American boy, controls the kitchen easily. He is now crowned as (被誉为) “the country’s hottest chef (厨师).”
McGarry began his cooking career four years ago and said it was something he was soon drawn too.
He wanted to cook as much as he could do it. After looking at all these cookbooks and going on the Internet, he thought he could achieve that one day. McGarry said. “Every time I try it, I hope to keep getting better and better. I just fell in love with it.”
He said his mother’s cooking was another reason for him to cook. He didn’t quite like his mother’s food, so he decided to try something simple. He started cooking for himself. He began practicing his knife skills after school. Then, he started creating dishes for a few of his mother’s friends. Soon after, he created more complicated (复杂的) and expensive dishes for famous restaurants in America.
The real “I want to be a chef” moment came when McGarry decided to create his own dishes. He said a year later. When his skills in the kitchen got better, he was able to cook his way through most of the cookbook. He has worked in top restaurants across the country. His accomplishments (技艺) may seem like the work of an experienced chef, but this cook is only 14 years old.
The young man has a strong passion (热情) for cooking. He even turned his bedroom into an experimental kitchen lab. You can’t see any video games, basketballs or movie posters.
McGarry’s mother is proud of him and she fully supports her son. She said, “He showed such passion for this that it was an obvious choice to allow him to do what he loves to do.”
“Focusing on your passion and hard work certainly pays off in the end.” When Flynn McGarry was interviewed, he said, “At the point in your life where you stop caring if you’re going to be famous or do well, your dream will come to you.”
64. How old was McGarry when he started cooking?
65. Did he like his mother’s food?

The day when the jobs were handed out was the most exciting for the
children in the class. Every child was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.
As some jobs were more interesting than others, the children were eager to be given one of the best. Among them Rita stood out. She was a kind and quiet girl. Last year she carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. She was the favorite to be given the best job —— to look after the class dog.
But this year there was a big surprise. Each child received one of the normal jobs, like preparing the books for the lessons, cleaning the blackboard or looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box with some sand and one ant. Although the teacher insisted that this ant was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed.
“I will turn this little task into something great,” Rita said to herself. She started to study everything about the little ant, gave it the best food and made the box perfect. The ant ended up growing quite a little bigger.
One day, the teacher announced that Rita’s class had been chosen to accompany Doctor Martinez to the tropical rainforest to study all kinds of insects in summer, because the class had best cared for the little ant.
The class was filled with joy. Everyone thanked Rita for having been so patient and responsible. And children learnt that to be given the most important tasks you have to know how to be responsible even in what are apparently the smallest tasks.
50. How did Rita feel when she was given her job?
A. Disappointed. B. Interested. C. Worried. D. Excited.
51. The class was chosen to go to the rainforest because _______.
A. everyone did a good job B. Rita looked after the ant well
C. Rita was given the best job D. the children studied the ant
52. Which of the following is mentioned in the passage?
A. Being a good student will get praise and prizes.
B. Every teacher thanked Rita for being kind and quiet.
C. Studying insects can help people become more successful.
D. We should be responsible for the job even if it seems small.
C
A great many people, when they speak of home, tend to connect it with a certain atmosphere, certain physical surroundings (环境), and certain emotional attitudes within themselves. This sentimentality(多愁善感) toward home is something that has come down to us from the past. Many modern people do not have it, and I think it is a good thing that they do not.
In the old days, life was difficult. Enemies could attack you and kill or rob you, and you had little protection against them. People did not live in well-built houses where doors could be locked. They did not have the protection of an organized police force or telephones which could call the police instantly. How did this influence the way people felt about home? Small family groups clung(贴近) tightly together for protection against beasts and against other men.
Today, thanks to modern transportation and well-organized society, thousands of people willingly and eagerly leave the surroundings where they were born, and the oftener they do so, the less sentiment they are likely to have for those surroundings. I lived in England for three years, and I noticed that boys and girls left their parents’ homes and lived in places of their own. There they could just telephone and ask an agency to provide them with a house or an apartment, which was their home. How has the meaning of this word “home” been changed by such activity? What does home mean to those people or to families who often move about, living in first one hotel and then another? I believe that for them home means a place where they can have privacy.
As for me, the atmosphere and surroundings of the place where my parents live have no sentimental attachment(依恋). Home is where I can shut the door and be by myself. When I left my parents several years ago, I was anxious to leave. You might call it unfeeling, but that was the way I felt. On the day of my departure for the United States, my grandmother cried. My father, however, showed that he knew how I felt. “Son,” he said, “I am not sorry that you are leaving us. I only hope that you make the most of your time.”
53. Why are modern people willing to leave their parents’ homes?
A. Because they can afford the money to live outside.
B. Because there are no wild animals or enemies around.
C. Because the society provides them with the feeling of safety.
D. Because they are not actually satisfied with their environment.
54. What can we learn from the article?
A. Surroundings influence the way that people act.
B. Not many modern people have sentimentality toward home.
C. Rights to privacy are well protected in modern society.
D. Older people can hardly understand the leaving of the young.
55. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Home B. People and Home
C. Different Ideas about Home D. Ideas of Home Have Changed
D
Depression is not a choice. Rather, it is a true medical condition like high blood pressure or heart disease. In the United States alone, more than 17 million people suffer from depression with women being twice as likely as men to suffer from the disease. Depression crosses racial and socioeconomic lines. Anyone can suffer from it, and those that do are not “crazy” or “weak”. They have a serious yet highly treatable disease.
Feeling down? You’re not alone. If depression seems pretty common, it is. One in every ten adults suffers from depression. And that’s what has scientists confused. If depression causes harm to the body, why is it so widespread in the population? Some scientists think they may have the answer. Depression may have an evolutionary (进化) benefit. It may improve one’s chances of fighting off infection (感染).
Scientists have known that depressed people show an immunoreactive(免疫反应性的) condition known as inflammation (炎症),even when they are not infected. For several years they have been finding that genes (基因) linked to depression also affect the function of the immune system. Stress, which can lead to depression, also change the immune system. These findings suggested that depression was somehow linked to the body’s ability to fight disease .
Some scientists now come up with the idea that depression might have had an evolutionary advantage in the days before modern medicine and antibiotics(抗生素). Infection was a major cause of death in early human history. Surviving those infections determined which genes were passed to the next generation.
They suspect that depression helped people, especially children, survive infection. Extreme tiredness leads to inactivity and less social contact which helps keep infection from spreading. Having no appetite helps avoid food sharing which can also spread infection. Sleeplessness, which is associated with both depression and immune system activation, may have been a mechanism to keep a person alert (机警) to fight off enemies after injury.
If scientists are correct about this link, it could lead to new treatments for depression. They are interested in drugs that treat conditions where the immune system attacks the person’s own body, known as auto immune diseases. It is possible that medicine known to treat auto immune disease may be successful in treating depression also.
56. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 means ______.
A. there is a depression line between different groups and societies

57. In Paragraph 2 the author ______.
A. introduces an idea on depression
B. gives an example to show his idea
C. explains how depression works
D. describes the depression problems
58. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Depression can spread infection.
B. Stress may affect the function of the immune system.
C. Women are less likely to suffer from depression.
D. Modern medicine is widely used for treating depression.
59. The writer mainly wants to tell people that depression ______.
A. is serious but highly treatable disease

Beijing is a crowded city of high-rise buildings everywhere. When there is a fire, it can spread easily and quickly. Every year, there are thousands of people losing not only their property (财产) but also their loved ones in fires. In many cases, these fires happened because people were careless. So it is important to monitor (监督) some household activities.
Use of electrical appliances
Always pay attention to the electrical wiring and electrical appliances (电器) that you are using. Choose proper electrical appliances and use them correctly. For example, allow enough space behind your TV sets to make sure that there is room for the heat to escape. Do not put heaters near newspapers or other materials that can burn easily. When the electrical appliances are not in use, disconnect them from the electricity supply. When you notice problems with your electrical appliances, make sure to repair or replace them quickly. It is also important to avoid connecting too many plugs to the same socket (插座) as fires may result.
Fire risks in the kitchen
The kitchen is a place where we can find fuel (燃料), cooking stoves and many different kinds of electrical appliances. Because of this, you have to be more careful when working in the kitchen. Before cooking, open the windows to allow fresh air into the kitchen. Do not leave the kitchen when a stove is in use. Keep food packages and waste paper away from a stove as well. If you smell strong gas in the kitchen, disconnect the gas supply and contact your gas supply company immediately.
Matches and lighters
Put matches and lighters in safe places. Do not let children play with them.
Emergency exits
Do not block the emergency exits (紧急出口) or lock them. When there is a fire, the emergency exits are your main escape paths.

C中的on,在。。
看到了there be与wrong,很多同学会毫不犹豫的选择了A,叫做’ ….
我们看到了标志词:as soon as,前半句还有will+do的结构,后半句肯定要用一般现在时了,故直接排除了B,C,D。 类似as soon as 这样的主将从现标志词还有:when,if,unless等等。
选项里,A have动词原形,B had 过去式,C will have将来时,D am having 现在进行时。
B ,learned(learnt)过去式。
Be busy doing。
答案是 A。
这里修饰的“Happy New Year”这句话。
The bank person just nodded to
I showed all ______ of being impatient.“我”显示出不耐烦的所有什么,在things“事情”、points“观点”、signs“迹象”、facts“事实”中,只有signs才符合题意,“我”显示出不耐烦的所有迹象。
答案应该是our need,因为修饰need的是to thank them,不会是他们有感谢他们自己的需要。
I felt that he was also missing the small things in life like a hot cup of tea and lying in a warm bed for a few more minutes like me. 这源于高三的完形填空和阅读理解,出题老师把这道题在简化这道题的过程中,没有看到for a few more minutes 修饰的是lying in a warm bed,而非miss,在去掉lying in a warm bed的时候没有去掉for a few more minutes,于是出现了这么个奇怪的句子。
所以,这道题去掉for a few more minutes,选择missing就好了。
其实,有心的同学可能会发现这里的they were there for me和40空后面的thank them for being there很类似。
A
定位词为books that you do not read anymore. 根据定位词直接到文章去找答案,在首段最后一句if you have books that you do not read anymore, you can share them with others出现与题干吻合的内容,直接可以找到答案C,即有不读的书可以与别人分享。
48. 【答案】A
We do not want textbooks, magazines and dictionaries.
B
50. How did Rita feel when she was given her job?
A. Disappointed. B. Interested. C. Worried. D. Excited.
但是文章问的是How did she feel? Although the teacher insisted that this ant was very special,Rita could not help feeling disappointed。 A。can’t help doing sth情不自禁做..
51. The class was chosen to go to the rainforest because?
A. everyone did a good job. B. Rita looked after the ant well.
C. Rita was given the best job. D. the children studied the ant.
One day,the teacher announced that Rita’s class had been chosen…because the class had best cared for the little ant.
52. Which of the following is mentioned in the passage?
A. Being a good student will get praise and prizes.
B. Every teacher thanked Rita for being kind and quiet.
C. Studying insects can help people become more successful.
D. We should be responsible for the job even if it seems small.
The ant ended up growing quite a little bigger。
研读此部分,根据第二段“Life was difficult…Enemies could attack you…People did not live…They did not have…” C “… the society provides them with the feeling of safety.”(社会提供给人们以安全感)与文章所述观点相符,因此C为正确答案。
选项A “周边环境影响人们的行为方式”,根据文章第二段第一句话“… thanks to modern transportation and well-organized society…”
60. 【答案】:E
【解析】选项上句出现两次idea, 第二段中出现的but his wife wasn’t so sure about the professor’s great idea与上段形成转折关系,可知上一句肯定提到idea,即使用了逻辑转折关系和原词重现原则。
【解析】选项B中提到的his invention, 指代上句话中的the professor 和time machine;另外,上句的wasn’t 对应选项中的would allow, 形成对比转折关系。
62.【答案】:A
Because people were careless.
【解题思路】“Why did fire happen in many cases?”,题目问我们火灾经常是在哪里发生的。第一段最后一句:in many cases,从这句话可以看到fires happen与题目中fires happen对应,于是确定文章定位之后,看本句后面写到:because people were careless为答案出处。
We shouldn’t put heaters near newspapers or other materials that can burn easily.
【解题思路】“Where shouldn’t we put the heater?”,我们不应该将加热器放在哪里? 所以答案就是do not put heaters 后面提到的near newspapers or other materials that can burn easily.
Yes./ Yes it is.
【解题思路】“Is it important to avoid connecting too many plugs to the same socket?”,避免同一个插座上插着太多的插头是不是很重要?
(We should) Open the windows to allow fresh air into the kitchen.
【解题思路】“What should we do before cooking?”,做饭前我们应该做些什么?
To tell us how to/some useful ways to prevent fires (at home)./To tell something about fire prevention (at home).
【解题思路】“What is the purpose of the passage?”,本文的写作目的是什么?
____________ do exercise for an hour a day to keep fit.
You’d better
____________ water the flowers while I am away?
Can/Could you
Yesterday, he ________________________ he finished reading the book.
【正确答案】didn’t (have a) rest until
The more you learn, ________________________ you know.
【正确答案】the more you will realize how little
。。就越。。。”。最简单的一个记法便是例句:The more, the better.”
We should ________________________ in Beijing.
【正确答案】(try to) take the bus as much as possible (in order) to make the air cleaner/so that we can make the air cleaner
解题时,首先根据中划出四个要翻译的重点,不难想出“乘公交”是take the bus;“尽量多、尽可能多”as much as possible;“为了”in order to/so as to/to/so that…。
? show one’s gratitude(n.)/ thankfulness(n.)/ appreciation(n.)to sb.
? be grateful(adj.) / thankful(adj.) to sb.
