According to a report in the Beijing Times stated on Thursday that the country is considering building a new high-speed railway that would ultimately connect it with the lower 48 states of the US.

Specifically, the route currently under consideration would begin in northeastern China and run through Siberia to the Bering Strait. At this point, there would be an underground tunnel that cuts through the Pacific Ocean to connect Russia and Alaska, from which the train would continue south through Canada until arriving again in the United States.

This interesting proposal has one issue that wasn't mentioned: rail gauge. China, Canada, much of Europe and the Middle East, and the US use standard gauge, but Russia has broad gauge tracks. Will the tracks thru Russia be standard, broad, or dual? Any of these choices will be costly to someone.
The best solution, IMO, would be for Russia either to make the tracks on the Trans-Siberian railway dual gauge, or build parallel standard gauge tracks.
With standard gauge trackage through Russia, Central Asia, and across the Bering Straight, most of the standard gauge trackage in the world could be linked.

I have my doubts about this ambitious plan. Even if it was possible to build an underground tunnel to cross the Bering Straits, it would still require the cooperation of three other countries to see it through to completion. That may well be too many cats to herd.

I don't agree with this premise. I don't think most Americans 'hate' China or the Chinese. I live in California in a neighborhood full of them. They are decent people and good neighbors. The U.S. also does a lot of trade with China, much to the benefit of most Americans.
If you said, instead, that Americans are worried about the Chinese, or that some fear the future plans of China with regard to the U.S., I might agree with you. But I can't go along with 'hate.'

China is in geopolitical confrontation with the west, but I think people are being way too
dramatic about Chinese investment. Most Westerners; Americans in particular, have this
mental image of China as this pure evil, psychotic supervillain, but this simply is not the
case. China isn't perfect, but it doesn't have drones killing innocent people in Yemen,
Pakistan and Afghanistan. They are trying to innovate and open up more and reform
themselves. People are quick to generalize, and it's a shame

Rail travel is a great way to see the world and connect cultures. Don't know if this would strengthen relationships with said countries,but it would do a lot for enterprise. The Chinese may have a problem going into Alaska. Sarah Palin may not approve.
