芍药（学名：Paeonia lactiflora）是一种芍药科芍药属的著名草本花卉。其在中国的栽培历史超过4900年，是中国栽培最早的一种花卉。
芍药花瓣呈倒卵形，花盘为浅杯状，因其花形妩媚，花色艳丽，故占得形容美好容貌的“婥约”之谐音，名为“芍药”。芍药不仅有极高的观赏价值，更有相当重要的药用价值。其根制成中药具有镇痉、镇痛的药用价值。位列草本之首，其被人们誉为“花仙”和“花相”，且被列为“六大名花”之一，又被称为“五月花神”，因自古就作为爱情之花，现已被尊为七夕节的代表花卉。
芍药，别名将离、离草，将离（《纲目》）、犁食（《别录》）、白术（《别录》）、余容（《别录》）、铤（《别录》），白者名金芍药（《图经》）， 时珍曰∶芍药，犹约也。 约，美好貌。此草花容约。郑风诗云∶伊芳其相谑，赠之以芍药 。《韩诗外传》云∶芍药，离草也。董子云∶芍药一名将离，故将别赠之。俗呼其花之千叶者，为小牡丹；赤者为木芍药，与牡丹同名也。
