An UndiscoveredMasterpiece

I discovered Mo Yan and this title years ago through Amazon, whenit was recommended as an "undiscovered" work. Sadly, it is stillthe case that very few people have read either The Garlic Ballads or Red Sorghum, Mo's othermasterpiece, let alone heard of the author. This is tragic, giventhat he is immensely talented, one of the true literary masterswriting today. The GarlicBallads tells the tale of a group of Chinese peasants whoselives are dependent upon selling their garlic crop; when harvestsexceed governmental estimates, officials curb the amount of garlicthat can be brought to market, setting off a violent chain ofevents. Against this backdrop, Mo weaves presents three stories:that of two lovers, which dominates the novel, as well as afamilial conflict and the relationship between two friends.Mo's voice is inventive, poetic and urgent, yet he never losessight of the plot, making this book difficult to put down.Goldblatt also deserves a great deal of credit for his translation.I do not read Chinese, but I often have the sense in readingEnglish translations, even of great works, that a great deal hasbeen lost, that there is something missing from the original work.Goldblatt's translation is so good as to make the reader mistakethis for an English novel; the prose is nearly flawless. Any readerinterested in literature would be wise to pick up this novel, ifjust for the ending, which is unsettling yet poetically rendered,and will stick with the reader for years. Years from now, probablywhen Mo wins a Nobel, I am sure he will have a wide following, butfor now, The GarlicBallads is a novel that cries to be read.

莫言得了诺贝尔奖后,美国汉学家[WWw.aIhUaU.com]、中国文学研究者、“西方首席汉语文学翻译家”葛浩文教授的知名度,迅速从学术界扩展到了更广泛的读书界。前不久,葛浩文来到中国,在北京、沈阳、上海等地的高校参加了一系列围绕“中国文学走出去”的研讨活动。关于翻译,葛浩文有他的特殊心得:“作者与译者之间,是1种不安、互惠互利,且偶尔脆弱的关系。”

译者与作者之间的关系有时“很脆弱”
莫言得奖后,很多人说,葛浩文的出色翻译以及他在翻译时对莫言原著进行的许多大胆删节甚至改写,使译本更适合西方读者的阅读口味,才引起了诺奖评委对莫言小说的青睐。对此种传言,葛浩文予以“断然否认”。他认为,莫言得奖首先是因为小说写得好,而他对莫言作品的删节与技术处理“并不多,很有节制”。
葛浩文在翻译中的创造性影响,依然不能被忽略。他在每次演讲中也一再呼吁读者对译者的作用与劳动给予更多的重视。
“译者是人类精神的信使。翻译是不同文化的融合,是创造性的价值生成。虽然翻译中对原著而言会失去一些东西,但这不是译者的错,翻译是必须的。有人说,90%的翻译是不好的。但是,谁不想做那余下的10%呢?”葛浩文说。
葛浩文认为,译者与作者之间的关系有时“很脆弱”。他说:“很幸运的是,我与大多数小说家的合作都很愉快,尤其是与莫言的合作,他对我将其作品翻译成英文的工作大力支持、鼎力相助。他很清楚汉语和英语之间是不可能逐字逐句一一对应的。他会很体贴、和善地给我解释作品中一些晦涩的文化和历史背景,他明白翻译是对原文的补充而非替代。”
