The Oriental Pearl TV Tower is located in Pudong Park in Lujiazui,Shanghai. The tower, surrounded by the Yangpu Bridge in thenortheast and the Nanpu Bridge in the southwest, creates a pictureof 'twin dragons playing with pearls'. The entire scene is aphotographic jewel that excites the imagination and attractsthousands of visitors year-round.
This 468 meters high (1,536 feet) tower is the world's thirdtallest TV and radio tower surpassed in height only by towers inToronto, Canada and Moscow, Russia. However, even more alluringthan its height is the tower's unique architectural design thatmakes the Oriental Pearl TV Tower one of the most attractive placesanywhere. The base of the tower is supported by three seven-meterwide slanting stanchions. Surrounding the eleven steel spheres thatare 'strung' vertically through the center of the tower are threenine-meter wide columns. There are three large spheres includingthe top sphere, known as the space module. Then there are fivesmaller spheres and three decorative spheres on the tower base. Theentire structure rests on rich green grassland and gives theappearance of pearls shining on a jade plate.
Visitors travel up and down the tower in double-decker elevatorsthat can hold up to fifty people at the rate of seven meters persecond. The elevator attendants recite an introduction to the TVTower in English and Chinese during the rapid 1/4-mile ascent. Onceyou reach your destination, you will be amazed at the variety ofactivities available as the various spheres and columns actuallyhouse places of interest, commerce, and recreation. The inner toweris a recreational palace, while the Shanghai Municipal HistoryMuseum is located in the tower's pedestal. The large lower spherehas a futuristic space city and a fabulous sightseeing hall. Fromhere, on a clear day a visitor can see all the way to the YangtzeRiver. The base of the tower is home to a science fantasy city. Thefive smaller spheres are a hotel that contains twenty-five elegantrooms and lounges. The pearl at the very top of the tower containsshops, restaurants, (including a rotating restaurant) and asightseeing floor. The view of Shanghai from this height fills youwith wonder at the beauty that surrounds you. When viewed from theBund at night, the tower's three-dimensional lighting makes it adelight of brilliant color.
It is amazing that this ultra-modern tower combines ancientconcepts such as the spherical pearls, with 21st Centurytechnology, commerce, recreation, educational and conferencefacilities.
