It was a lazy morning during the Christmas week. We were enjoying breakfast when the doorbell rang. It was a little girl, standing at the doorway with a piece of paper and a face that carried an expression of want, rather a common ___1___ during Christmas.
She murmured that the paper was her booklist and that she was going around ___2___ money to buy her schoolbooks. My children went inside and brought some __3____ for her, This kind of incident happens very often in my hometown, __4___ during Christmas.
From where I was seated I could see her clearly. She looked about ten years old and she wore a dress too big for her. She spoke in a __5__voice and looked at me straight in the eye. Something made me get up and __6__ her.
In answer to my questions, she said that her mother made hoppers and she __7__them before going to school. But the hopper money was not adequate to __8__the list; therefore, she was going from house to house asking for help.

We drove to a nearby bookstore. She sat __10__, with a strange look on her face. When the clerk was taking all the things on the list, the little girl kept staring as if confused. Perhaps she had never __11__so many new things before. They were merely exercise books, pencils, pens and such things. She whispered her __12__to us. Strange, I hadn't been aware that giving such __13__ things to one in need, could bring me such a lot of happiness.
As we drove back I could see the little girl in the mirror. All the gifts I had given in my life never __14__ a face so much. She was grasping the parcel, smiling to herself. The total event made us all very _15__. Our Christmas became more meaningful.

While we are alive and well on this Earth, we should always strive to make the best of every situation that comes our way. It is __1__ to complain (抱怨) about the difficulties in our life, but if we __2___ our thinking and see the many blessings that we possess, we will quickly find 7

I read a piece of news today that the richest people were paying 736,000 dollars for watches at present. As I was __1__ my head at their craziness, I glanced at my own 8-dollar watch. My tiny home has more __10__ in it than the biggest mansion in the world and I can walk on the shore of the local lake here and __11__ in its beauty for free.

My son still looked not well.
Finally, I took a deep breath and started looking at the __10__ of the other moms and dads in the waiting room. I could see a calm, relaxed and peaceful look on their faces. I __11___ they all knew that they were at the doctor's office and that their turn would come, and they had faith that the doctor could heal (治愈) their child, or at least make them feel __12___.
When I realized that, I said my prayers, and I immediately started to feel much __13___ too. Just knowing I was in the "waiting room" at the doctor's office, whom I believed could make David __14___, made me feel better and relieved my __15___. I knew that everything was under control, and even my son looked like he was getting better.

I was told as a kid that I was __1__. Other kids in my neighborhood used to __2__ me because my skin was too dark, my lips too thick, my eyes too big and I had lots of mosquito bites on me. As a result, living by my __3__ just wasn't a good choice. Looking back on my growing-up, that was not really a __4__ thing because it helped me develop so many other __5__. Now I am very smart, hardworking, elegant, enthusiastic, athletic, friendly, charming, caring, willing to__6__ and learn from my mistake. I am kind-hearted and very often keep in tough with my spirit. Because of this, my confidence and strength __7__ my inside and have little to do with the outside world. My teacher and friends make such __8__ on me," You're so nice"," You're such a hard worker"or"You're so positive!"
Somehow, as I got older, people began to __9__me for my physical feature as well. They'd say to my mom, "Your daughter is attractive!" And my peers would say, "You have a great body!" or " I love your eye brows!" However, I still don't __10__ recognize these qualities. And this is why I have __11__ the story of the ugly ducking till now. It doesn't even __12__ when it turns into a swan.
Anyway, in my view, my past helped me develop something that's so much more __13__ than external(外在的) attractiveness. Also, it helped me become much more refined(优雅的), just like gold in the fire. My inner beauty shines so much and it offers me __14__. Physical beauty will disappear just like flowers fade and die __15__. One day I was sitting in my classroom during our lunch break, as I was used to staying alone. Miss Sadia __3__ that and she called me over to her desk and began to talk to me. It was just a __4__ conversation. After that day she gave particular __5__ to me and it made me feel special. 12
My grades started to __6__ and I began to feel happier. It gave me the __7__ that someone believed in me. With her constant support, I came second in the class and was __8__ to monitor. However, after class seven she started to slowly drift away(疏远)but did keep a constant check on me. By the time I was in class nine we __9__ spoke to each other but by then I had changed for the better. I passed the exam and left my school. I was out of her __10__ but I studied harder and harder. I knew I could do it as she had implanted(灌输)her __11__ and confidence deep inside me.
One fine day, I met her at a wedding. I ran to her and __12__ her with tears in my eyes like a child. I could not help asking her,"Why did you stop __13__ me?"

Love and time, those are the only two things in all the world and all of life, which cannot be bought, but only spent.
My work and interests __1__ me to spend probably too much time in front of my computer, at least according to my wife's view. She and I were talking one day about __2__ and funerals. And I asked,"What will you do with my body? Buria? Cremation (火葬)?"
She answered, "I think I'll just have you stuffed (制作标本)and put in your chair by the __3__. In that way when I walk through the room I won't even notice that you __4__."
I got the point---too much computer time. And how I spend my time and my love is of great importance.
The question I ask myself is this, "Do I generously and freely give love and time away, __5__ to those closest to me?"
Charles Francis Adams was the United States __6__ to Great Britain during the Lincoln administration. He had the habit of __7__ a daily diary. He also taught his son Brooks the value of journaling his activities in a diary.
13
One __8__ day, eight-year-old Brooks recorded,"Went fishing with my father, the most splendid day of my life." It must have been a splendid day, for the next forty years Brooks __9__ mentioned it in his diary. It became a life-long __10__.
As usual, his father also __11__ about the fishing trip. His own diary on that vital day for his son reads,"Went fishing with my son; a day __12__."
He didn't get it that one single day he generously and freely gave love and time away to Brooks may have been one of the most __13__ days of his son's life. Did he feel that, as a United States ambassador, his time was too __14__ to be "wasted" with his children? History seems to show that a fishing trip with his son __15__ Brooks a lot.
I only hope I will spend love and time so well.

My wife, daughter, and I moved into our home nine years ago and we put a lot of time and energy to the yard to get it looking like it does today. We live on a corner which is higher than street level, and the entire side of the yard is surrounded by a professionally built rock __1__. Yet the front of the house is another story, because instead of a wall along the sidewalk the __2__ appear to be just thrown around as if someone were in (a)__3__ to finish. So we called this area our "rock garden".
I do all of my own yard work, even the weed--pulling.
Last summer I reached the end of the rock garden and found a tiny plant that I could not __4__ identify. I knew I didn't plant it and Denise claimed that she didn't either. We __5__ to let it continue growing until we could __6__ what it was.
Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the mystery plant, it appeared to be a(n) __7__. It was spindly(细长的) with a tall skinny stalk and only one head on it. I decided to __8__ it and weed around it. As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something __9__. The sunflower had not started where I saw the stalk begin. It __10__ had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.
That's when I__11__ that if a tiny little sunflower didn't let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we are __12__ to do the same thing as well. Once our environment begins to see that we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can __13__ the same nourishment(营 14

Stand tall like the sunflower and be __14__ of who and what you are and the environment will begin to __15__ you. You will find a way to go under or around your big obstacle in order to reach your desires.

Once I heard a wonderful story about a bright young man who was an excellent Standford student. To __1__ him for having done so well in school, his parents gave him a(n) __2__to Asia for the summer.
While there he met a rabbi (法师) who said to him,"Don't you see how you are __3__ your soul with this success-oriented way of life? Your idea of happiness is to __4__ all night studying for an exam so you can get a better grade than your best friend. Your idea of a good __5__ is not to find the woman who will make you whole, but to __6__ the girl that everyone else wants."
"That's not how people are supposed to live," the rabbi advised."Join us in an atmosphere where we all __7__ and love each other."
The young man had completed four years at a high school with __8__ competition to get into Stanford. He was experienced in this sort of way to gain success. After hearing the rabbi's advice, he called his __9__ from Tokyo and told them he would not come home immediatly, and decided to lived in a temple to look for the real meaning of success before continuing his study.
Six months later, his parents got this __10__ from him:
"Dear Mom and Dad,
I know you weren't __11__ with the decision I made last summer, but I want to tell you how happy it has made me. For the first time in my life, I live __12__. Here there is no competing and no trying to get ahead of anyone else. Here we are all __13__ and we all share. This way of life is so much in harmony with the inner essence(精髓) of my soul that in only six months I've become the number two student in the entire __14__, and I think I can be number one by June!"
I am __15__ about some people's narrow and dangerous ideas about success. Achieving more, 15
getting more, becoming number one. Not that there is anything wrong with healthy achievement. It's just that there is a difference between earning well and living well.

As I have moved into my forties now, I have begun to see that body age has very little to do with soul age. My body __1__ telling me again and again that I am getting older. My soul, however, seems to __2__ the thought.
Just this morning I awoke to find my __3__ aching and walked into the bathroom. I stretched my back as much as I could and then looked in the __4__. My thinning hair was becoming grey. My forehead was lined with deep wrinkles and my frowning face made me look like a tired, middle-aged man.
This __5__ me but only for a few seconds. Then I remembered that whether I grow young or grow old mainly __6__ myself. I said"Good morning" to God, thanked Him once again for my life and smiled in the mirror. __7__, the wrinkles in my forehead disappeared while the laugh lines around my eyes smiled widely with joy. My __8__ eyes began to shine brightly and I watched as fifteen years __9__ from my face in a second.
No matter how old this body of mine may get, my soul remains young. This is __10__ for all of you as well. When it comes to eternity (永恒), age is a number and the body is a liar.
Before you lose the way to look for the fountain of __11__, take a look inside yourself. You may find that your spirit is still young, vital, and wrinkle-free. You may see that the __12__ to give love and share joy knows no __13__. You may realize that when it comes to eternity our lives are here for only a(n) __14__ moment in time. God created your soul and created the body that carries it around. One is temporary but the other is forever. Don't spend too much time __15__ the one that won't last when you can be living for the other one that will.

"Forgiveness is the sweetest revenge." I saw this wonderful old saying again in a book recently. It got me thinking about all the times that I have been __1__ to forgive others in my life and all the joy that it has brought me. One __2__ stands out particularly well.
I was a young boy at a summer camp. I was having a great time and __3__ everything about it except for another young boy about my age. To say we didn't __4__ would be a statement that made the situation less serious than it really was. We spent most of the week irritating(惹怒), insulting, and picking on each other. __5__ finally came to blows on the next to last day of camp. We got into a fist fight which I lost. __6__ older boys broke it up before I was hurt too much. I spent the rest of the day alone, refusing to speak and stewing (思考) in my own __7__.
The next day my spirits were __8__ when Mom brought the boys in our cabin some of her delicious homemade __9__. I was enjoying a few slices of it when I saw the other boy sitting by himself at the bottom of the steps outside. He seemed very __10__ right then. I am not sure what moved me to do so, but I took my pizza down and __11__ it with him. It made all the anger and pain inside me __12__. We became friends after that. I never got into another fist fight either. I had found out that sharing and forgiving were way more fun and a lot less painful. Forgiveness is __13__ the sweetest revenge. It can turn an enemy into a friend. It can __14__ a heart from the chains of anger, hatred, and pain. It can open a soul to the sweetness of love and joy once again. May of your life always be __15__ of sweet forgiveness.

During a recent business trip there was an electrical fault on the trains to the airport. Many people were __1__, had to buy new tickets for flight and also arrange __2__ for the night. I was traveling alone and like everyone else I had to stand in a very long queue.
I had queued for about 30-40 minutes and was __3__ when I saw a lady with a small __4__ in her arms standing near the back of the queue. I knew she had at least another 30-40 minutes to wait just to reach my __5__ and maybe 10 more minutes from there as I was quite __6__ to the front of the queue. I could also see that she was quite __7__ and the child was heavy and asleep on her shoulder.
I looked back until I caught her attention. Once I got her attention I __8__ her forward and asked the people who were behind me whether they minded if I __9__ my position in the queue with that lady's. So I let the lady into my position and went to the back of the queue __10__. At first she said nothing as I know she was very surprised by this __11__, but when she got to the front of the queue and had __12__ her hotel she looked back and found me in the queue. Her look of relief and __13__ made the rest of my wait very easy indeed as I felt very good for the little gesture I had made.
What touched me too was that other people in the queue close to me had seen what I did and __14__ it was a nice thing to do. I hope I inspired the idea to do similar things for others in them.
But I know I made that lady's day just a tiny bit __15__ and allowed her to get her child to a bed sooner and that was more than enough for me.
